1. The 20p Tread Depth Test
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. A simple way to check this is the 20p test. Place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tyres may be below the legal limit and need immediate inspection.
2. Sidewall Bulges and Cracks
Physical damage can occur from hitting kerbs, potholes, or general aging. Inspect the sidewalls for bulges, cuts, or deep cracks. Bulges indicate internal structural damage and carry a high risk of a sudden blowout at speed.
3. Steering Vibrations
Vibration through the steering wheel or body of the car can indicate uneven wear, misaligned tracking, or internal tyre damage. If you feel sudden vibrations, have a professional inspect your wheels immediately.
